BACKGROUND
Jordan has few natural resources, but contains one of the highest concentrations of monuments and archaeological sites in the world, which may be considered its principle asset. The efforts to preserve and effectively manage the country’s cultural heritage are hampered by many problems. General guidelines and best practice manuals need to be elaborated and widely disseminated. Management plans integrating the local population and raising its awareness on cultural heritage are also greatly needed. This may contribute to formulating the strategies and policies for an effective protection, conservation and safeguarding of the country’s rich cultural resources.
